About Me:

Some images from my work calling Oregon soccer home games during my sophomore year.

Hello and welcome to my portfolio website! My name is Shawn Medow and I’m a 2019 graduate from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. I’m a sports writer, reporter, broadcaster and editor. Here’s my story:

I quit it to talk about it. In my senior year of high school, I faced a fork in the road: Continue to play competitive soccer, or focus on my high school’s newspaper. I elected to choose the latter.

I had known I wanted to work in sports journalism since I was 8 years old. It began with me muting the television during Anaheim Ducks NHL games. I became the commentator, printing up the statistics of the opposing team while already having memorized the Ducks’ stats.

Fast forward to the University of Oregon, where broadcasting, covering and reporting from seven events in four days is just another weekend.

I was a broadcaster and the play-by-play voice of Oregon soccer for the campus radio station, KWVA; a host and panelist on talk shows, as well as a producer for games and talk shows. That started in my very first term of college when I was put on the final three soccer broadcasts to do analysis after the sports director learned of my experience in soccer. During my spring term of freshman year, I decided to apply to the independent student-run newspaper, the Daily Emerald, where I’m an associate sports editor and reporter as well as a podcast

host and producer and the host of a weekly video show.

During my senior year at UO I began broadcasting as a color commentator for the Pac-12 Network at volleyball matches at the UO. I called two matches with the Pac-12 Network and conducted a post-match stand-up interview after calling Oregon vs. Utah.

I’ve freelanced for a multitude of outlets covering sports ranging from track and field championships to the USWNT to high school sports in Southern California. I worked for nearly three years as a sports writer/producer at KTLA 5 News in Los Angeles, where I wrote scripts and edited tapes (highlights, soundbites and packages) for newscasts. In August 2022, I moved full-time to SportBusiness.com (click the link to read my work), where I currently work as a US reporter based in Los Angeles.

I’ve come far from my 8-year-old self sitting on the couch pretending to be the commentator. This is only the beginning of my career in sports journalism, and I look forward to what lies ahead in my future.

Please browse my website to see the various work I have done as an aspiring journalist.
